Why a check before purchase saves money
A used car often looks better in the advert and at the viewing than it really is. Freshly polished, vacuumed inside, all lights working – and yet repaired accident damage can be hiding behind a shiny door. In a private sale, the warranty is usually excluded. Anything you notice after signing is then generally at your expense.
With an independent used car check, you know what you are getting into before you buy. We inspect the vehicle on site at the seller’s or dealer’s premises, show you any anomalies directly on the car and explain what the findings mean for price and condition. This way you can negotiate in a targeted manner – or decide not to buy in good time.
The points we check in the used car check
- Paint thickness on all body panels – an indication of repainted or filled areas
- Panel gaps on doors, bonnet, boot lid, wings and bumpers
- Rust on sills, wheel arches, lower door edges and in the visible underbody area
- Tyre condition, tread depth and uneven wear as an indication of suspension problems
- Glass, lights, seals and add-on parts
- Interior, seats, controls and warning lights in the instrument cluster
- Comparison of mileage, service book, invoices and overall impression
- Signs of repaired accident damage, such as sanding marks, colour differences or bolts that have been moved
A stationary inspection does not replace a garage diagnosis of the engine, gearbox or electronics. However, it reliably shows whether the bodywork bears traces of an accident and whether the overall condition matches the price. If anomalies make further testing advisable, we will tell you.
Typical findings and what they mean
| Finding | Possible meaning |
|---|---|
| significantly higher paint thickness on one part | repainted, possibly after damage |
| uneven panel gaps | parts have been removed or realigned |
| colour differences between add-on parts | parts replaced or painted |
| tyres worn on one side | alignment or suspension not in order |
| gaps in the service book | maintenance cannot be proven, check the mileage |
Not every finding is a reason not to buy. A properly repaired bumper is something different from repaired damage to a side member. What matters is that you are informed and that the price matches.
How the used car check works
You send us the link to the advert or the most important vehicle data and the location. We arrange an appointment as quickly as possible – when buying a used car, every day often counts. On site, we inspect the vehicle together with you, also in the presence of the seller if you wish. Afterwards, we discuss the results directly at the car. If you wish, we also record the findings in writing so that you have a basis for price negotiations or the purchase contract.
Private sale or dealer – what matters
When buying from a private seller, liability for material defects is usually excluded. You buy the vehicle as it is. This makes it all the more important to know its condition precisely beforehand. Statutory warranty rights do apply with a dealer, but even then it is tedious to argue about defects after the purchase. An independent check beforehand saves time, nerves and often money.
You should be particularly careful with conspicuously cheap offers, vehicles with many previous owners, re-imports and cars without a complete maintenance record. Freshly painted vehicles or an unusually clean engine bay are also a reason to take a closer look.
How to prepare for the appointment
A few preparations help the check to run smoothly. Ask the seller in advance whether the service book, invoices and the last MOT (HU) report are available. Arrange an appointment in daylight or at a well-lit location so that paint differences and small dents are visible. Ask that the vehicle not be washed or polished immediately before the appointment – polish can conceal small scratches and colour differences.
If possible, the engine should be cold at the viewing. Starting noises, smoke on a cold start or warning lights are then more noticeable. You should arrange a test drive yourself with the seller; during the inspection, we look for signs that show up on the stationary vehicle.
After the purchase: condition documented
A documented initial condition is also useful after the purchase. If the vehicle is later damaged in an accident, it is easier to prove which damage is new and which was already present at the time of purchase. When you sell later, you can show interested buyers how well the vehicle has been looked after. Keep the report together with the purchase contract and the service book.
Checking used electric cars and hybrids
When buying a used electric car, there is another question: what condition is the battery in? Many manufacturers offer their own battery certificates or diagnostics that the seller can present. Ask for them. During our check, we also look for marks on the underbody that indicate grounding, the condition of the charging port and charging cable, and warning messages on the display. The bodywork inspection for accident damage is carried out in the same way as for any other vehicle.
Putting the purchase price into perspective
Whether a price is fair depends not only on the model, age and mileage. Equipment, state of care, tyres, upcoming maintenance work and repaired previous damage have a significant influence on the value. Online valuation portals provide initial guidance, but do not see the actual vehicle. After the check, we can tell you which findings reduce the value and which work is likely to be due in the near future. With this information, you negotiate on an equal footing.
Examples: brakes that are due and new tyres can quickly amount to several hundred euros. Undisclosed, repaired accident damage can noticeably reduce the resale value. Such points belong in the price negotiation.
Tips for the purchase contract
Have the most important details confirmed in writing in the purchase contract: mileage, number of previous owners and, above all, whether the vehicle has had accident damage. If known damage is concealed, you may be entitled to claims despite the exclusion of warranty – this is a legal question on which a law firm can help if in doubt. Also record which findings from the check were already known at the time of purchase.
If you want to sell the vehicle again later, a vehicle valuation or a valuation report helps to substantiate its value objectively.
Used car checks in Berlin and Brandenburg
We inspect used cars at private sellers or dealers throughout Berlin, for example in Neukölln or Reinickendorf, and in the surrounding Brandenburg area. As a car appraiser for Berlin & Brandenburg, we come to you free of charge. It is best to talk to us about costs in advance; general information can be found on the costs & prices page.
Paint thickness measurement: what the readings reveal
In every used car check, we measure the paint thickness on all body panels. The readings show whether a component still has its original paint or has been repainted or filled. A single higher reading is not yet a cause for concern. Only the overall picture is meaningful.
- Consistent readings on all parts: indicates largely untouched paint.
- Increased readings on a single part: often a repaint, for example after a scratch.
- Significantly higher readings on several parts on one side: may indicate repaired accident damage.
- Very high readings in individual places: an indication of filler and therefore of a major repair.
We explain the measurement results to you directly at the vehicle and record them in the documentation. This allows you to raise a repair with the seller in a targeted way and to put the purchase price into realistic perspective.
Checking the engine more closely: compression test and oil analysis
For older vehicles or high mileage, it is worth taking a closer look at the engine. A compression test shows whether all cylinders compress evenly. Significant deviations can indicate worn piston rings, leaking valves or a defective cylinder head gasket. We also check the engine oil. An oil turbidity analysis indicates whether coolant or fuel has got into the oil.
Such tests are not part of every used car check in Berlin, because not every vehicle needs them. If the engine runs roughly, sounds unusual on a cold start or the service book has gaps, we will agree them with you before the appointment. You will then know before the purchase whether expensive repairs are looming.
FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a used car check cost?
That depends on the vehicle and the desired scope, for example whether the findings are to be recorded in writing. Talk to us in advance so that you know what to expect.
Can you inspect the car at the seller’s?
Yes. We come free of charge to wherever the vehicle is, whether at a private seller or a dealer.
Can you detect every instance of accident damage?
Much repaired damage can be identified by paint thickness, panel gaps and traces of repair. However, nobody can give a one hundred per cent guarantee with a stationary inspection.
Do you also check the engine and gearbox?
We look out for warning lights, noises and visible anomalies. A technical diagnosis of the engine, gearbox or electronics belongs in a garage.
How long does the check take?
Usually about an hour, sometimes a little longer depending on the vehicle and scope.
Should the seller be present during the check?
It is not essential, but often practical. Questions about the vehicle’s history can then be clarified directly.
Is the check also worthwhile when buying from a dealer?
Yes. An independent look is also worthwhile at a dealer, especially when larger sums are involved or the history is unclear.
Do you need fast, professional help?
We work for you in Berlin and Brandenburg and come to you free of charge. We offer appointments as quickly as possible.
